One way butterflies are classified is according to
the veination patterns in their wings.

The study of butterflies and moths is called Lepidoptery.

There are about 140,000 known species of Lepidoptera!

A butterfly's taste buds are on their feet!

In the adult form, it is believed that
butterflies do not carry diseases that can affect Humans.

About three quarters of all animals species are insects.

Insects have existed for 400 million years.

Butterflies were first represented by the Egyptians
of Thebes, about 3,500 years ago.

Butterflies can see ultra-violet light.

When the weather is bad, butterflies roost in trees.

The blue Morpho butterfly is only blue because of
the refractive scales on its wings.

Like all insects, butterflies have a heart, but no veins or arteries!

In the Brazilian dance to honor the dead,
the dancers dress as a giant Morpho butterfly.

There are no references to butterflies in the bible.

The largest known butterfly is Ornithoptera alexandrae.

Butterflies can be gynandromorphic: Male on one side and female on the other,
or they can have mosaic male/female patterns within one individual.

A butterfly has 20,000 scales per square inch on its wings.

Certain species of Lepidoptera can fly up to 40 kph per hour!

The longest recorded flight by one butterfly was
just under 3,000 km in 130 days!

Butterflies are in the same Phylum as lobsters! Pass the butter!
